Clothes That Don’t Fit by Linsey Hall & GC giveaway!

Before I was a writer, I was an archaeologist. Needless to say, I like old things. Very old, very dead things, if we want to get technical about it. But that’s a bit creepy. So let’s focus on the less creepy old stuff: clothes.  I like old clothes. I’m not nearly clever enough to navigate vintage thrift stores, but I love the hand-me-downs from my mother and grandmother.

I have two dresses that my mother wore in high school. Admittedly, I haven’t fit into them since I was fifteen, but I love them all the same. One is black cotton with white lace overlay; the other is the opposite. I also have her wedding dress, which I wanted to wear at my wedding. It’s a big 1980’s Princess Diana affair and I thought I’d have it modernized a bit by a seamstress. One problem: the giant meatball stain all the way down the skirt and straight onto the train. During the reception, a guest dropped a meatball (made by my grandmother) right onto the skirt. My mother watched it roll right down onto the train, leaving a big red streak in its wake. Needless to say, I had to buy a new dress.

But best of all, I have a leather jacket from my grandmother. It’s a honey brown color and a little too short and a little too tight because she is far slenderer than I, but I would never give it up. On special occasions, I squeeze into it and try not to move my arms too much (reaching upward is absolutely out of the question). But I look fabulous—if a bit like a stuffed sausage.

You might have noticed a trend: I don’t fit, or barely fit, into any of the clothes that I love so much. But I hoard them like a magpie because I can’t help myself. But if I can’t wear the clothes, do you know who can? The characters in my books. Esha, the heroine of Soulceress, the second book in my Mythean Arcana series, wears my grandmother’s jacket religiously. She’s a type of immortal called a soulceress. Everyone despises her because she drains their soul’s immortal power for her own use. But she has no control over that, so their disdain is a pretty miserable thing for her to live with. The leather jacket (in addition to her trusty feline familiar, Chairman Meow) is like armor for her. Maybe it’s even good luck.

Do you have any old clothes or jewelry of your own or from family members that you love? Can you fit into it, and if not, do you still save them like I do?
